Humanitarian supplies to aid in the response and recovery efforts following the earthquakes on April 25 and May 12, 2015, in Nepal will continue to be airlifted from Dubai to Kathmandu, as part of UPS’s commitment to provide relief from the effects of the disaster.

UPS is coordinating three relief charter flights to Nepal in partnership with International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF, and the World Food Program (WFP). The flights departing from Sharjah Airport are delivering relief supplies such as water family kits, emergency medical kits and surgical supply kits. Also on board are plastic sheets and tarpaulins to provide shelter for the many displaced families

The relief work is part of The UPS Foundation, the philanthropic arm of UPS, which announced an initial commitment of $500,000 (USD) to aid in response and recovery efforts following the earthquake. The UPS Foundation is contributing a combination of cash and in-kind support to enable the provision of urgent relief supplies as well as potential on-the-ground logistics support for long-term recovery needs.

“These three flights will play an important role in getting crucial aid to the most vulnerable people in Nepal, especially following the second earthquake,” said Rami Suleiman, UPS vice president, Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Africa District. “As recovery efforts continue in Nepal, we will work closely with our partner organizations, including the IHC in Dubai to evaluate additional ways that UPS can help through critical logistics support.”

“Our remarkable partnership with UPS is in line with the IHC strategy 2015-2021, to establish regional leadership in CSR Advisory and help channel the CSR money in serving humanitarian causes.  We value UPS exceptional contribution and their efforts to ensure fast and efficient humanitarian response to Nepal during this unfortunate disaster.”  Shaima Al Zarooni, IHC CEO added: “we are keen to improve the public and private sectors’ engagement in the humanitarian work utilizing their knowledge, experts and capabilities to save lives worldwide”.

The UAE represents an important supply chain node for bringing additional efficiency to UPS’s established network of facilities and globally integrated transportation network. The UPS contract logistics facility located in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone is in close proximity to the IHC and partners’ warehouses allowing for increased responsiveness and flexibility to aid in the ongoing humanitarian relief efforts.

The UPS Foundation’s Humanitarian Relief & Resilience Program supported more than 263 humanitarian relief shipments across 43 countries with particular focus on Typhoon Haiyan and the Ebola outbreak throughout 2014. The program provides communities with crisis recovery support at all stages, from disaster preparation to urgent relief following an event through post-crisis rehabilitation. This process is designed to help build long-term resilience after a disaster.
